Depart ment of Transporta tion’s Division of Avia tion. Tri-County is one of 11 airports which will be improved through grants, and one of only two in eastern North Carolina. The $57,940 in state funding will be used for a waterline extension to the terminal building at the airport, which is lo cated centrally between Aulander, Rich Square and Ahoskie. “These grants will al low airports to become safer, and better serve the pilots, passengers and businesses that use them,” said Division of Aviation Director Bob by Walston. “Airports are a critical part of our transportation system, and these projects will help improve the link between our state and national and global mar kets.” The only other air port located in eastern North Carolina which will receive state fund ing is the Pitt-Greenville Airport. That airport is expected to get $1.1 million for pavement re habilitation of the taxi way. The following airports also received funding: Ashe County: $18,112 for a runway extension, precision approach path indicator (PAPl) installation and an ob struction survey; Curtis L. ROXOBEL - Bertie County’s western most town celebrated Christmas Saturday night. The town of Roxobel held its second annual Christmas Tree Light ing, and more than 100 people gathered to cel ebrate the season with friends and neighbors. The event began with the citizens of Roxobel and their visi tors enjoying cookies. hot chocolate and cof fee as they spent time talking and listening to the sounds of Christ mas music by B&E DJ. Next on the docket was an opportunity for the town’s Christmas tree to be lighted by its most senior citizen. Buck Bishop smiled as he helped the town of ficially begin its Christ mas celebration. Hope steps back in time for holidays BY LESLIE BEACHBOARD Bertie Ledger Advance WINDSOR - Historic Hope House celebrated its Christ mas Open House last Sunday from 1 until 5 p.m. The Hope mansion and the King-Bazemore House were both decorated in Christmas decor appropriate to the early 19th century period. Horse and Carriage rides were available for guests to be transported from house to house. Governor David Stone built the centerpiece of the site, the Hope Mansion, in 1803. The Ber tie County Commis sioners voted to appoint a new chairman Bazemore and vice chairman at their regularly scheduled m e etin g held Mon day. Accord- Wesson ing to Ber tie County Manager Scott Sauer, on the first Monday meeting in De cember N.C. General Statutes require every county commission board go through a re organization process. “We will now take nom inations for a new chair man and vice chairman for the board,” added Sauer. The then-current Chairman John Trent moved to nominate the then Vice Chairman Er nestine Bazemore as the new Chair for the Bertie County Commis sioners. Commissioner Stew art White offered a sec ond. There was no dis cussion, and the vote passed unanimously. Next was to seek rec ommendations for the vice chairman’s posi tion. “1 would like to make a nomination for Com missioner Trent as vice chair,” said White. Commissioner Tammy Lee offered a second. Next newly appointed Chairman Bazemore moved to nominate Commissioner Ronald Wesson as the new vice chairman. Commis sioner Wesson offered a second. The vote for Commis sioner Trent as the new Vice Chairman did not pass. The vote was 1-4.
